This is a corrected and enhanced version of Erich Haupt's classic commentary on the First Epistle of John. It was originally published in German and then translated into English by W. B. Pope in 1879. Now in the public domain.

The electronic text has been carefully checked against the print edition. Mistakes (or typos) in the text, such as verse citations have been corrected. This is indicated by the letter ^[N] in square brackets. Mouse over the 'N' to see what the print text read.

Inline translation provided for all Greek text in the commentary and footnotes, indicated with square brackets and [“dark blue text”].

Nearly all Greek and Hebrew words have been keyed to Strong's numbers (or linked to Liddell-Scott-Jones). Simply mouse-over a Greek word to have the English definition pop up.

Translation is provided for some Greek text, early church documents and classical writings cited by Haupt. This is indicated with square brackets and [“dark blue text”].

Translation of the Latin text (highlighted in teal with italics), as well as definitions of a few "technical" terms (highlighted in teal), appears in popup when the user mouses over the text.

Definitions are given for some text the reader may be unfamiliar. For example, κ.τ.λ. (k.t.l.) = καὶ (kai, “and”) + τὰ (ta, “the”) + λοιπά (loipá, “rest, remaining”) lit. "and the remaining." Same as the Latin etc. = etcetera.

To my knowledge, this is the only complete electronic text of this commentary online. There is a flip-book version available at https://archive.org/...istleofst00haup (but only as scanned images of the pages).

Note: This is a very good commentary on the Epistle of First John. I have noticed it quoted and/or referred to often in more recent commentaries, even after more that 100 years from the publish date. The reason I invested heavily in this project--in terms of time--is to open this resource to English speaking Pastors and teachers who may not know Greek, Hebrew and Latin, or whose language skills have become a bit "rusty." I hope this is a blessing to you and to those who sit under your ministry.
