This is a difficult passage for many to understand, and it has often seemed that attempts to explain the meaning of this passage have only added to the confusion. Thus, it is with a bit of timidity that I come to add my voice to the many others who have spoken on this passage. It is my prayer that I may present the truths of this passage in a basic, understandable form so that Christians may rejoice and praise God as we all anticipate the glorious future awaiting Israel.
I think it will be best to provide some background before coming to Daniel chapter 9 itself. Thus, I will “back up” about as far as anyone can go…all the way back to the “beginning” of Genesis chapter 1.
Let me first say that we will use a literal hermeneutic to interpret this passage. To put it more simply, we will give the words of the text their usual and customary meaning and avoid reading anything into the passage that is not there.
