"The Benediction" was published by Rev. William H. Dolbeer in 1907. In this short book, he discusses the meaning of a benediction - in contrast to other commonly associated actions such as prayer, invocation or dismissal. He then provides a thorough discussion of benedictions found in the Bible, beginning in the Patriarchal age, then focusing on the Aaronic benediction, and finally on the "Pauline" or "Apostolic" benediction (2 Cor 13:14). This is followed by a comparison with the Aaronic benediction and finally a number of points regarding the proper place and use of benedictions.

The author is of a Lutheran background, but provides an ecumenical perspective in at least some sections. Most points and conclusions are supported by numerous Biblical passages. Overall, a worthwhile read on an important and often-neglected topic.
