About James Martin Gray
James M. Gray (1851-1935) was a Bible scholar, editor, and hymn writer, and the president of Moody Bible Institute.

Gray was an early fundamentalist who upheld the inspiration of the Bible and opposed the contemporary trend toward a social gospel. Gray was also a dispensationalist who believed in the premillennial, pre-tribulational return of Jesus Christ at the Rapture.

About Primers of the Faith
In this 50+ chapter work, Gray presents (the equivalent of) a modern day, Baptist defense of our faith in God and the Bible, using clear, simple terminology. The work introduces the Bible, defends the Protestant 66 book canon, examines Christian evidences, and compares Christianity with other, well known religions. Mechanical reproductions of this classic are still in print and sold today. (This was a special request module).

Review by Moderator Peter Pfpeller
Finished reading this book and I give it 5 stars.

Part 1 is a good summary of the conservative view of how we got our Bible and how the canon was formed.

Part II is the best part of the book.

This section is filled with evidence of how we can know the Bible is what it claims to be. Christianity is compared to the other major religions and is shown to be the only one that truly meets the needs of man.

There is an excellent section on the evidence of Bible prophecy. Gray came over time to believe that the future prophecies concerning Israel will be fulfilled just as literally as the past ones have been. This is the only valid way to interpret them. Any other view is forcing the pre conceived ideas of man on the text. Israel was not yet back in the land when he wrote these chapters (1901).

My favorite chapter in the book was the chapter on the evidence of the "idea of Jesus Christ". Here is a brief quote from that chapter.

The strongest objectors to the principles of Christianity have been compelled to ask, “How could such men as the human authors of the Gospels conceive of such a man as Jesus Christ?” Where could they have found a model to have copied from? The ideal of the Jews would have been a scribe or pharisee, that of the Romans a warrior, that of the Greeks a philosopher possessing the mingled vices and virtues of a Socrates, for example, but where could a suggestion of Jesus Christ be found, had he not lived before the eyes of men? But if this be true, does it not prove the credibility of the record of which it is the central fact?

Part III is a good summary on the inspiration of the scriptures.
